M O V I N G : P H A S E O N E
Hello Darlings,
If any of you reading this know me, you know that I am a planner. I like to stay organized and I love to be ahead of the game in any way that I can. Moving can be such an annoying time for most people. The hassle of packing up your entire home, moving it all into a new location, then unpacking it all. You foresee a lot of days and nights "living out of boxes" ahead and eating out because you don't know where the heck you put your silverware. Then there is the whole ordeal of trying to time out when to move all the things in your refrigerator because lord knows you don't want any of your food to spoil. Don't get me wrong, some of this inconvenience is unavoidable, but there are a few things you can do to make your moving experience a lot easier:
PHASE 1:
Purging!
This is an opportunity, not a hinderance. Just think about all the times you've ever said: "I just really need to go through my closet and throw some things out." Well, now you have the chance to go through your entire house and throw things out!!! Phase one of moving should start the second you know you're going to move. For most people, it's at least a couple of weeks before. If you're buying a home, you have ample time because of escrow. This is the time to start gathering boxes from your job or your friends especially if any of your friends work in construction... you've struck a gold mine! Take one room at a time and throw out EVERYTHING you don't need.
Now, not only is this an opportunity to "cut all the fat" in your life but it's also an opportunity to make a little extra money. When Diego and I sat down and planned out everything in our new home we knew there were some things we just needed to get rid of because they had lived their full life and it was time to let them go. We also knew we wanted to take this time to upgrade and renovate our style as it had changed over the three years we'd been together. This meant out with the old and in with the new! A lot of our decor was good as new or very lightly worn and I didn't want to throw it away, so I did what any (smart) millennial would and I downloaded an app to sell it!
These are the ones I found to be the most successful: OfferUp and Letgo.
Within minutes I was getting offers on all my old stuff and made a good chunk of change letting go of the items I didnt need anymore.
This alone will help to minimize the number of things you need to pack, carry, and unpack while also putting a little extra money in your pocket. Next week we'll talk about Phase Two!
